Geely's $1.8bn (£1.2bn) acquisition of Volvo at the weekend is not only the culmination of nearly a year of negotiations between the Chinese car maker and Ford, Volvo's parent company. Nor is it only the final piece in Ford's plan to sell off its luxury European brands. The takeover is also a sign of the coming of age of the Chinese motor industry.

Today the TimesOnline website reported today on the £2.6Billion of investment that is coming to the UK car industry.

"The re-emergence of the British motor industry is shifting up a gear, with £2.6 billion worth of investment flowing into the UK, safeguarding or creating thousands of jobs.
Nissan is to start mass-production of electric vehicles in Sunderland; Ford plants in Dagenham, Southampton and Bridgend will build the next generation of cleaner diesel and petrol engines for its cars around the world; and the Formula One team McLaren is to build supercars in Woking to rival Ferrari and Lamborghini in the retail market..."

The re-emergence of the British motor industry shifted up a gear today after the Government said that it would financially back a £1.5 billion investment by Ford in producing cleaner engines in the UK.
The American motor company said that it was injecting the money into four sites in the UK to develop low-carbon vehicles.
The Government, which wants the UK to be a global hub of green motoring development, said that it would back the programme with £360 million of loan guarantees.
The news follows government grants to Nissan to build electric cars in the UK and a £270 million loan guarantee for Vauxhall to invest in greener cars at its Ellesmere Port factory.
